NATIONAL CHILDREN’S CENTER (NCC) HOSTS PRIVATE RECEPTION FOR DR. HAROLD E. ROBLES, FOUNDER OF NETHERLANDS-BASED MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE INSTITUTE (MKI)
NCC hosted a private reception in honor of Dr. Harold E. Robles, President Emeritus of the Albert Schweitzer Institute for the Humanities and European founder of the Medical Knowledge Institute (MKI), of the Netherlands. Dr. Robles was joined by his American partner in establishing MKI, Dr. Peter Bittel, CEO of Futures HealthCore. In attendance were NCC’s Senior Leadership Team, Board members and International Learning Exchange in Professional Youthwork (ILEX) fellows. The Medical Knowledge Institute an international non-profit organization, operates from the premise that healthcare is a human right. The mission of MKI is to improve the quality and humanitarian values of life, especially in developing countries. In achieving its mission, MKI’s provides medically-related training and workshops to local healthcare workers. Dr. Robles presented an inspiring vision of the current and future work of MKI. Dr. Robles extended a partnership offer to NCC to assist the Institute in improving the development and education of high risk children in South Africa. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, a member of the MKI International Board of Advisors, sent a sincere letter to NCC thanking us for the support of MKI. One of the Institute’s most successful programs, Mother and Child First, educates midwives and healthcare workers in the prevention and transmission of HIV from mother to child in developing countries. Knowing that while HIV and AIDS are devastating diseases, South Africans were dying of poor primary care, MKI opened Health Information Centers in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Pietermaritzburg and Soweto. The Institute fully believes, as does NCC, that education is the key to assuring good health care for those most vulnerable.
